Foil sealing tray of vials on a Thermal Press machine

Foil Sealing a Tray of Vials

This video showcases a Thermal Press International H-Series Thermal Press performing precision heat sealing of a foil layer onto an entire tray of vials in a single cycle. Heat sealing is widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic applications to create secure, uniform seals that protect contents from contamination while maintaining product integrity.

In this application, a full tray of vials is loaded into a custom-engineered fixture designed to ensure accurate and repeatable positioning. The tooling incorporates a specialized nest to support the vial tray, along with precision locating pins that align the foil sheet over each vial opening. A secure clamping system holds both the tray and foil in place throughout the sealing cycle, preventing movement and ensuring consistent seal quality across all positions.

The system is equipped with a power shuttle table that enhances both operator efficiency and process consistency. While the operator loads and unloads trays at the home position, the shuttle indexes the fixture into the sealing area, allowing for a smooth, repeatable workflow that supports higher production throughput.

During the sealing process, the thermal head applies controlled heat and pressure across the entire tray surface, bonding the foil uniformly to each vial. Critical process parameters – including temperature, dwell time, and applied force – are precisely controlled to achieve consistent hermetic seals without damaging the vials or compromising the foil material.

This multi-up sealing approach enables manufacturers to significantly increase throughput compared to single-vial processing, while maintaining strict quality and repeatability standards. The H-Series platform, combined with custom fixturing and automation features, provdes a robust and scalable solution for high-volume foil sealing applications across medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
