This video showcases a Thermal Press International C-Series machine configured for precision heat staking of printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies using a rotary indexing table. Heat staking is an ideal solution for mechanically fastening plastic components to PCBs without introducing vibration, particulate, or stress that can compromise sensitive electronic components.
In this application, PCB assemblies are loaded into a custom-designed fixture that ensures accurate positioning and repeatability througout the process. The fixture securely holds both the PCB and mating plastic components in place, allowing for consistent alignment of the staking locations and uniform forming of the thermoplastic posts.
The system utilizes a rotary indexing table to maximize production efficiency. While one assembly is being processed under the thermal head, the operator can simultaneously load and unload parts at a separate station. This continuous workflow significantly reduces cycle time and increases througput, making it well suited for high-volume manufacturing environments.
During the heat staking cycle, the thermal head applies controlled heat and force to reform the plastic posts, creating a secure mechanical bond between the plastic component and the PCB. Critical process parameters – including termpaerature, dwell time, and applied forece – are tightly controlled to ensure reliable, repeatable results without damaging the electronic components.
Operator safety is enhanced through the integration of custom guarding and a light curtain system, which prevents access to the processing area during operation while maintaining ease of use and productivity.
This example highlights the versatility of the C-Series platform, which can be customized with application-specific tooling, multi-station indexing tables, and advanced safety features to support a wide range of PCB assembly and electronic manufacturing applications.
